Cranberry Township Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Will Opossum Feces Cause Issues If I Touch It Or Breath It?
In short, the answer is yes. Opossums cause enough mischief without having to worry about the mess they leave behind. However, you do need to worry about it. This is even more true if you are the person tasked with cleaning up behind the animals.
Opossum feces can leave a terrible stench in your yard that seems to linger forever. It has quite a distinct smell that is rather unmistakable. This is also true for the attic and any other area where they have been eradicated.
Precautions
If you happen to come across opossum feces in an outdoor area, it is best to leave it undisturbed. If that area is in your yard, you’ll want to take proper precautions before attempting clean-up. The same is true for other areas, such as attics.
Opossum feces can be difficult to identify by looks alone. It is similar in size and shape to that of a cat or even a small dog. What sets it apart is the nasty odor. It is unmistakable.
When attempting to clean up opossum feces, you’ll want to wear personal protective equipment. Long, thick gloves that cover the forearms are recommended. You’ll also want to opt for a good facemask or respirator. It is best to spring for quality in this case.
Protect your eyes with proper fitting goggles as well. After clean-up, you should still wash yourself from head to toe with soap and water.
Dangers
Opossum feces contains many toxic organisms and disease-causing bacteria. Avoiding skin contact is simply not enough to keep people safe during clean-up. Disturbance of the area can cause many of the bacteria to scatter into the air where it can be breathed in or settle into the eyes.
Some of the most serious diseases that can be contracted from opossum feces include Salmonella, Hepatitis A, Rabies and Leptospirosis. Opossum feces is also known to carry the Buruli ulcer bacteria. These bacteria belong to the same class of bacteria that causes Leprosy and Tuberculosis in humans.
These Buruli bacteria cause major skin ulcers in humans and the treatment is extensive. They are commonly referred to as flesh eating ulcers because they tend to spread.
Even parasites that live in the feces, like fleas, can spread diseases. If you are tasked with cleaning up after an opossum, you should exercise extreme caution. When in doubt, call a professional who has some experience. It will be safer for everyone.
